Smith is from Morris Hall, St. Catherine and credits the wisdom of her Grandmother Miss Iris with keeping their family together and her mother who left for America to create opportunities for the family, for her determination to succeed. Capt. Smith was the second black woman and the first Jamaican-American woman to command a U.S. Naval Destroyer.
